Winnemac Labs, originating from a sustainable computing research lab at Northwestern University, is a consulting firm that specializes in wireless sensing devices. Based out of the mHUB Hardtech Innovation Center in Chicago, IL, our team of three experienced engineers collaborates to create end-to-end devices and applications, empowering our clients to concentrate on their research and business objectives

Meet the Team

Alexander Curtiss


  • Alexander's expertise stems from both extensive industry practice and advanced graduate research. After earning a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering at Tufts University in 2017, he further sharpened his electrical and computer engineering abilities at a prominent nationwide consulting firm. He relocated to Chicago in 2020 to pursue a PhD in Computer Engineering at Northwestern University in the Ka Moamoa lab. He currently splits his time between work on his dissertation and Winnemac Labs. At Winnemac Labs, Alexander's specialization covers the entire embedded systems spectrum, including product specification, circuit design, manufacturing, and firmware development.

Blaine Rothrock


  • Blaine is a seasoned software engineer with professional and academic experience in a wide-range of applications. Blaine started his career as a consultant focusing on data-rich enterprise applications for sales pipelines. He became passionate about mobile application development, focusing primarily on custom-facing iOS applications before returning to academia. Blaine is a Ph.D. candidate at Northwestern University, focusing on the interaction and development of embedded systems for environmental sensing and health wearables, with an expected graduation in 2025. Blaine holds a Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence from Northwestern University (2020) and a Bachelor of Science in Informatics from Indiana University (2013). At Winnemac Labs, Blaine focuses on connecting embedded systems to robust data pipelines and interactive applications that enable flexible system designs to meet diverse clients’ needs.

Tommy Cohen


  • Tommy is an experienced mechanical and industrial designer. He graduated from Northwestern in 2021 with a Bachelor of Science in Manufacturing and Design Engineering. After graduating, he joined the Ka Moamoa Lab as the lab's in-house mechanical engineer and graphic designer. Tommy specializes in electronic device enclosure design, sensor implementation, and the fabrication of high-fidelity prototypes. He is well-versed in textile design for wearable electronics and is skilled at creating product renderings and informational graphics.
